The topic over at Illustrationfriday.com this week was “Popularity”. Zombies have become a super popular thing in the past couple of years. Tons of video games, movies and even a show on AMC. My 18 year old self wouldn’t have been able to wrap my brain around this, back then my friends and I had to run to the blockbuster or play Resident Evil to get our zombie fix. Times have changed, and I think I like it. I really didn’t just use this as an excuse to draw a zombie, it was one of the first things that came to my head when I heard the word. I used myself as the reference for this illustration. I was listening to The Boils album When the Sun Goes Down and it got me thinking about crime in Philly. I thought this would make a nice illustration on the topic, so I put a cityscape in the background. Hope you like it!

While I am at it I might as well also post another illustration that I did for Poogletsauce awhile back. It was for an article about the game Lemmings, which happens to be one of my favorites.

Seltzer
My brother-in-law, my wife and I are in the band Seltzer. It’s really just the two of us and anyone else that is around who feels like they want to sing. We have a few songs from our first single titled “Sandwich Single + Sides” over on Mowhawkradio.com.
We have been kicking around the idea of putting out a full album soon and calling it “Real Big Dish”. I sat down and made a cover for the album tonight, it was a good practice for me because I’ve been thinking that I want to do more “Punk Rock”(Or at least what I interpret that to be) style artwork which is something I’ve gotten away from over the past few years. Someone over on my other blog (penandmarker.wordpress.com) referred to this style as grungy, and I’m OK with that too. Basically I just like the idea of simplifying some of my illustration work back down to its most basic elements, and I think I achieved this with this illustration.
Anyway, here is the insert for the album:

Here is a version of the logo that I messed around with tonight too:

No legs
This week’s IF topic was Grounded, here’s my illustration:

When I went to Italy for my honeymoon I noticed something strange. In Rome there were a lot of legless people on skateboards. I felt bad when I saw the first one rolling around and begging for change, but after I saw about 8 of them I realized that they were not what they claimed to be(or at least I believe that they weren’t). They all wore somewhat baggy clothing and after awhile I realized that they must be puling their legs up and hiding them in their clothing. If thats true then they deserve any and all of the money they collect, thats gotta hurt after awhile.
Knockout!
An illustration I did about the game Punch-Out for Wii. The article should be up at Poogletsauce soon!
I tried somthing a little different than normal with this. I sketched this out in pencil, then inked it on paper and colored it in Photoshop. For most of my illustration work I either create the whole thing in Photoshop(or very rarely in Illustrator) or I draw up a really rough pen sketch, scan it and then ink and color in Photoshop. I like the way this turned out doing it a different way.

Saint Stephen’s Day

Acrylic and Sharpie on canvas
Today is Saint Stephen’s Day. Saint Stephen’s Day is a very strange holiday. In some parts of Ireland on the day after Christmas young boys will walk through the town with a stuffed/fake wren on a stick. In the past it would have been a dead wren on a stick, they would then go from house to house(while singing and dancing and just generally carrying on) and ask for a donation that they could use to help to bury the wren. The money that would be collected would then be used to continue partying that night or used to help fund a dance for the neighborhood. I only just recently read up about this holiday so I am not an authority on the specifics, but a dead wren seemed like a fun thing to paint at the time. Saint Stephen is the patron saint of stonemasons, coffin makers, horses, and also the patron saint of headache sufferers. So anyone who drank a little(or a lot) this past weekend and needs to make the hangover go away, he would be the guy to pray to if you believe in that kind of stuff.
Messenger

This weeks IF word was Messenger. The first thing I thought of was a mail carrier. My Dad worked for the United States Postal Service for his entire career, he started as a carrier and moved all the way up to Postmaster of our local town. For my entire life I remember the recognizable USPS logo embroidered or screen printed on one thing or another that he wore in to work every day. He finally retired this past year. I am very proud of my Dad, working for the Post Office is tough work. I was a mail carrier for a couple of years and I couldn’t cut it, the winters were way too brutal for me. Mail carriers weather it all just to get that letter into your mailbox. Rain, snow, sleet, hail and everything else mother nature can throw at them, they put up with it all.
Separated
This Friday the topic from IF was Separated. I don’t know all that much about the military, but I immediately thought about all the soldiers that go overseas and are separated from their loved ones for long periods of time. I can’t imagine going through that, I would never want to be that far away from my wife. Anyway, I suppose this illustration is in tribute of all the soldiers that will be far away from their loved ones this holiday season.

While organizing my files, look what I found!
It’s very rare that I post a bunch of illustrations all on one post, but over the past week I have been cleaning up my desktop on my computer and trying to keep things a little more organized. While doing this I came across some illustrations that I never posted on the site. Here are a couple of things that I did for Poogletsauce. Poogletsauce is a video game review website. The first image is from something I did just this past weekend. It was for an article on the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 is getting a new dashboard update(I guess thats like the operating system on a computer) and one of the things being added is better suppot for Facebook. Here is the illustration:

Another thing that I did for Poogletsauce was this header for the Thrift Store Junkie articles on the website:

I also made this illustration of Pikachu as a zombie for Poogletsauce in the beginning of this year:

Finally here is an illustration that I made for no particular reason. About 3 or 4 months ago I really felt like making an octopus so I sat down and drew this:

I want your skulls…
Something new and something not so new.
The first painting I made over the weekend. It isn’t quite the entire image, but my scanner wasn’t large enough to get the edges. The second one I finished about a year or so ago(its also slightly cropped), its framed and hanging in our living room right now.
Anywway… here they are…
